Song Ties

What are we singing in worship? Why are we singing it?

A Summer of Hymns … Unofficially, I am calling this summer “a summer of hymns”. For most Sundays, I have scheduled three hymns written which most people would call “traditional” hymns and one hymn that I would call a “modern” hymn. “Traditional” and “modern” are subjective terms, however. How far does traditional worship songs go back? To the early church? If so, our services this summer are definitely NOT traditional. If what is meant by “traditional” is songs that are in the “current” 1991 Baptist Hymnal, then that would be accurate (although there are quite a few that folks would consider traditional that are not in there … “His Eye is on the Sparrow” would be one example.) I call hymns like “In Christ Alone” and “God of Every Grace” modern hymns because they are fairly newly written by writers that are still living today. Some people might not call “In Christ Alone” modern though since it is twenty-five years old. It came out in 2001. The point of all this is that we all tend to come at music from a narrow perspective that defines these terms in very individual and personal ways. “Traditional”might really mean “the songs I grew up on” for some people. I hope and pray that the congregation of WHBC can appreciate and accept songs from all generations as long as they are on solid biblical ground and edify the church. All that being said, I hope all of you learn at least one song this summer as we experience a “summer of hymns”.
